Fool's Gold.

I have been on many journeys’ throughout the life that I am living. The one that has been most interesting and profound has been “ The Creative Journey”.
It’s a funny thing about being a so-called “ creative”. It’s the most daunting word in the Oxford Dictionary. It has so much weighting; you feel like people are always waiting for stuff, watching the way you articulate yourself and dammit even the way you talk has to sound like something not of this earth. Well here is some news for these annoying individuals who think creative juice just falls out of the sky for the masses to collect: It   is   not   easy to   just    be   creative  … in fact   it    is    a    big    fat   mix    of confusion served with a side of boiling hot pressure.
All my life, the pressure from all sides was just too much, the mundane school system that I went through that actually suppressed majority of my creative ability especially that high-school art teacher, the slave-driver who pushed for perfection and slammed anything she thought was not worthy enough for her classroom. Society, who shunned anything that God forbid, showed a bit of artistic freedom with you colouring out of the lines.
In essence though, these last two years have given my eyes a good wash. I’ve been looking at the world through different lenses. I left this journey before but I’ve come to the conclusion that it never left me. It was always there, playing apart in how I approached certain situations, the way in which I tackled my writing because when the door got slammed on my Fine Art dreams, writing became my solace.
This year in particular, being in the nucleus filled with creatives’, those who have come before me, those who never cease to not pass on their own pearls of wisdom they wish they knew at my age and those who continue to inspire me. One guy: Austin Kleon: http://austinkleon.com/
Now please understand the first time I saw my textbook for Creative Development, I was thinking: words that are suitable for almost any occasion, which I won’t inscribe here, because it’s probably sitting there in your predicted text on your smart phone anyway.  I was shocked that this is “ the guy”, look at this book? So small, funky typography and weird little doodles.
This guy is beyond inspirational because he the lessons he gives in “ Steal Like An Artist “ is so simple but also so powerful.
He has added a new path to my journey and the lesson that sticks out the most for me is, “ You are only as good as the stuff you surround yourself with.”
You need to surround yourself with people who share the same vision as you, otherwise what is the point of having and ideas if not to share it with people?
It’s shifting through all the stuff that lies in front of you, to get to the good and simple parts. It’s everything I wished they told me but I’m glad Kleon taught me this.
It’s a bit of Fool’s Gold.

  1. Beautiful description of the 'general perception' of a true art student in highschool. So relatable!

  2. It's my defiance that's allowed my creative spirit to blossom. Gotta get myself a copy.
